Since 1980 his productions have toured nationally and have played in every single leading commercial venue and repertory house in the land. These productions have been as diverse as MACBETH, Stoppardfs NIGHT AND DAY, Verdifs opera AIDA, Roald Dahlfs childrenfs opera JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH, and major revivals of WEST SIDE STORY, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR and OLIVER! Bob went freelance in January 1992 to take up offers of working with the leading repertory theatre companies of the UK: Bristol Old Vic Company, Liverpool Playhouse, Windsor Theatre Royal and Churchill Theatre Bromley. Also since this decision to go freelance he has had major success in Londonfs West End where his production of BLOOD BROTHERS has won every British Best Musical award and been nominated for three Olivier Awards. His international productions of BLOOD BROTHERS triumphed in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and, most significantly, in the United States, where it was nominated on Broadway for no fewer than six Tony Awards, including the highly coveted Best Director prize. SCROOGEfs Australian and Japanese premieres won Bob Best Director awards, and his recent Tokyo premiere of Patrick Stewartfs one-man version of A CHRISTMAS CAROL won the prize for Best New Production. His other West End productions include John Godberfs smash-hit skiing comedy ON THE PISTE (Garrick), which was nominated Comedy of the Year at the Olivier Awards, Dennis Lumborgfs controversial ONE FINE DAY (Albery Theatre), nominated Best Regional Play, Leslie Bricussefs musical SCROOGE (Dominion), and Karoline Leachfs THE MYSTERIOUS MR LOVE (Comedy). Television direction includes BBCfs drama series HERO TO ZERO, for which he was nominated for a BAFTA Award; Sky TVfs series IS HARRY ON THE BOAT?, DREAM TEAM; ITVfs NIGHT AND DAY, THE BILL and HEARTBEAT and Channel 4fs BROOKSIDE. Bob recently directed Leslie Bricussefs SCROOGE, starring Tommy Steele at the London Palladium and Richard Chamberlain in the USA. |
